Meet the ladies

Nina has been a writer from the time she could scribble with crayons. Today, the 24-year-old journalist writes for a South Florida newspaper and attends Florida Atlantic University, where she will graduate in May 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in multimedia journalism and political science. Out of her work clothes, Nina calls Pahokee, a small Florida town, her home. Surrounded by sugar cane, Lake O, and muck, Nina was inspired to create – a news site dedicated to her unique community. A competitor to the area’s newspaper, became a news source to many and has been praised even by producers of The Glades, a TV show on A&E that featured Nina as herself in one episode.

Zaimarie, or Zai, is a 22-year-old gal who lives in sunny South Florida. She was born in Puerto Rico, but in Miami, Fl she was raised to be the beach-loving, picture-taking, reggae-listening journalist she is today. In April 2010, Zai graduated from Florida International University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication. That May, she took an internship at a South Florida newspaper, which then hired her as a multimedia journalist in August. She is the youngest multimedia journalist at her paper.

How’d they meet? Nina and Zai met in May 2010 while both were interning at a South Florida newspaper. At first, they were cubicle buddies who talked about news and story ideas.  Soon after, the cublicle buddies turned into friends who talked about life and career goals (okay, and maybe they talked about men and shoes, too). A constant topic was the struggles of being young females in a male-dominated work environment. That’s when Nina and Zai worked together to bring you TakeChargeLadies, an online community where other goal-oriented women can join the discussion, as well.
